How child health nurse Pip is helping Discovery Coast parents

If you’re a mother or a child in the Discovery Coast region, there’s a fair chance you’ve met Pip Burton.

Working as a child health nurse at IMPACT Community Health Services, Pip is no stranger to this area or medical field.

For more than 21 years Pip has been a child health nurse, and before that she worked as a Paediatric nurse looking after sick children in hospitals for over 15 years.

She decided she needed a change from both shift work and, the often sad and stressful job of looking after unwell children.

So, Pip completed her child health studies and has been working mostly in this area since.

“Most days consist of speaking to mums about breastfeeding, routines, caring for their babies, measuring the growth and development of newborns to aged 5,” she said.

“I am also a nurse  immuniser, so I give childhood vaccinations.

“I do hearing assessments on all ages.”

Pip said as a nurse immuniser she also does the influenza vaccination clinics.

But that’s not all, she also runs a Mothers Group, and a Mother Goose program once a month.

Pip has done 123 Magic parenting and can assist with behaviour management issues.

She said having child health professionals in the Discovery Coast region was a great service as for some people it is a 3-hour round trip to access anything like it.

“We live in a fairly isolated area where a lot of mums live a long way from family support and some with FIFO partners,” she said.

“Being able to offer support and advice to often tired and upset new mums has been great.

“I have seen some mums through their first up to their fourth child and then seen the child at school for hearing assessments.

“Living in a small community it’s also nice that mums feel comfortable talking to me at the shops or about town.”

Pip said working for IMPACT has been great as she has been able to run different programs and have a more tailored approach to child health in the region.

IMPACT Community Health Services operates out of the health precinct on 2 Rafting Ground Road Agnes Water.

The ICHS is open 8.30am-4.30pm weekdays. For more details click here.
