What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme launched in July 2013, following years of conversations about the need for a serious reform of disability services in Australia. People with a disability have an equal right as other Australians to decide their best interests and to have choice and control over their lives.

The NDIS provides Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary support they need to enjoy an ordinary life. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme, families and carers will have access to the help they need to support people with disability so they can participate in a life filled with community and employment opportunities.

NDIS and Mental Health Services

The National Disability Insurance Scheme isn’t limited to individuals that have physical disabilities. A person who is living with mental health (psychosocial disability) that significantly impacts their life may also eligible. In fact, more than 1,800 Australians with a psychosocial disability are receiving support under the NDIS in trial sites around Australia.

Who is eligible for mental health services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

According to the NDIA, people dealing with “a psychiatric condition who have significant and permanent functional impairment” qualify for the NDIS mental health services.

What kind of support will someone with mental health receive from the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme will not support psychiatry services or medication, however, they will assist in finding housing, developing your skills in financial independance, building social relationships, support you in training and employment.
