STRONGER TOGETHER: Future Thinking Starts with [Theory] U

"STRONGER TOGETHER" is a weekly column where Tanya explores key issues. This week Tanya discusses how Otto Scharmer’s Theory U encourages us to let go of old assumptions, embrace openness of mind, heart, and will, and co-create future solutions for today’s complex challenges.

Most of us live guided by the past. We rely on habits, inherited beliefs, and familiar patterns because they feel safe. This “downloading” of old knowledge shapes how we think, act, and even relate to others.

But what happens when the world changes faster than our old maps can keep up? Many of us cling to yesterday’s answers – which works, until it doesn't – while tomorrow’s questions remain unanswered.

I first came across Otto Scharmer’s work at the Social Enterprise Open Camp in Italy. In a room full of innovators and changemakers, it struck me how often we default to the past, instinctively reaching for yesterday’s answers when facing today’s challenges.

Scharmer’s insight, captured in Theory U, shifted my perspective: real transformation happens when we learn not only from the past but also from the future as it unfolds.

Theory U describes a journey: moving down the left side by letting go of old assumptions, reaching the bottom through presencing (a blend of “presence” and “sensing”), and then moving up the right side to co-create new possibilities.

To do this, we need what Scharmer calls architectures of connection – three capacities that open the door to transformation:

  • Open Mind: Suspend judgment and bring curiosity to situations
  • Open Heart: Move beyond empathy to compassion, genuinely connecting with others
  • Open Will: Be courageous, let go of fear, and embrace what wants to emerge

And it begins in small interactions and everyday moments – listening to a colleague without rushing to defend your view or responding to a child’s question/challenge with curiosity rather than a quick answer. Each time you ask, ‘What does this moment call for?’ you create space for something new.

Why does this matter?

Because the challenges we face – poverty, inequality, environmental crises – cannot be solved with yesterday’s thinking. They require imagination, courage, and collaboration. Each of us, whether leading a team, raising a family, or shaping our communities, can practice this shift.

Start small: pause, listen deeply, and ask, “What future do I want to help create?” In that question lies the seed of transformation, not just for you, but for the world around you.
