"STRONGER TOGETHER" is a weekly column where Tanya explores key issues. This week Tanya discusses how small, everyday gestures, like a kind word or a nod of recognition, can build trust, inclusion, and stronger relationships in our workplaces and communities.

Not long ago, I watched a colleague quietly support a new team member during a busy morning shift. It wasn’t a grand gesture, just a quick “You’ve got this,” followed by a reassuring smile. The new staff member visibly relaxed, and the rest of the day flowed more smoothly. That moment stuck with me.
We often think strong relationships are built through deep conversations, shared experiences, or major milestones. And while those things matter, it’s often the small, everyday interactions, microaffirmations, that quietly shape how we connect with others.
These subtle, intentional gestures that say “I see you” or “You matter” are often the glue that holds relationships together.
A nod when someone’s speaking. A quick message to say, “I appreciated your help.” Remembering someone’s name and pronouncing it correctly. These aren’t just polite habits, they’re powerful signals of respect, care, and inclusion.
Over time, they build trust, emotional safety, and a sense of belonging.
Think about the last time someone genuinely thanked you or noticed something you did without being asked. It probably didn’t take more than a few seconds, but it made you feel seen.
That’s the magic of microaffirmations: they’re simple, free, and deeply human.
We often underestimate the impact of the smallest gestures. But it’s in those everyday moments, when we pause to acknowledge, include, or encourage, that real connection is built.
Microaffirmations don’t need to be loud or elaborate to matter. One nod, one kind word, one moment of recognition can quietly shape the way we feel, relate, and belong.
These small moments of recognition, these microaffirmations, aren’t just nice to have, they’re essential in helping us to build trust, show care, and strengthen the relationships we rely on every day.
When we take the time to notice, acknowledge, and include others, we’re not just being thoughtful, we’re actively investing in connection.
And that’s what makes us stronger together.
