Xtreme Turnabout Offers Second Chances and Stronger Futures

For many young people in Bundaberg, the journey to a better future begins with a conversation, and that conversation often starts with Zachary Wakeling.

As the youth coach behind IMPACT Community Services’ Xtreme Turnabout program, Zac brings more than a decade of experience in youth work, crisis support, and community engagement.

With a background in leading youth development programs at the Police Citizens Youth Club in NSW, Zac has worked with hundreds of young people to help them build resilience, reconnect with education, transition into employment, and improve their lives.

Now based in Bundaberg, he’s using those same skills to support local youth.

Xtreme Turnabout is one of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Youth Skills’ initiatives. Youth Skills offers nationally recognised training and support into employment to 15-24 year olds who are engaged with Youth Justice Services, Queensland Corrective Services or at risk of offending and engaged with the Queensland Police Service.

“I don’t see problems, I see potential,” says Zac. “Every young person has something valuable to offer. Sometimes they just need someone to help them see it.”

Xtreme Turnabout offers up to 12 months of tailored support.

Participants can access nationally recognised training (up to Certificate III), life skills development, and a range of practical learning experiences, including adventure-based activities, volunteering, workplace visits, and learner driver training.

Zac’s approach is grounded in empathy, structure, and trust. He works closely with each participant to understand their goals, break down barriers, and build a pathway forward.

“Success isn’t just about landing a job,” he says. “It’s about empowering someone to believe they deserve it and equipping them with the skills to excel in the next stage of their journey.”

Participants in Xtreme Turnabout have gone on to complete training, secure employment, and make meaningful changes in their lives. 

Skilling Queenslanders for Work provides skills development, training and job opportunities to unemployed, disengaged or disadvantaged Queenslanders through a suite of targeted skills and training programs.
