Empowering Career Pathways for Young Adults: A Case Study of Lachlan's Journey through the Transition to Work Program

Abstract:
This case study explores Lachlan's transformative journey through the Transition to Work (TtW) program after moving from New Zealand to Australia. Lachlan faced uncertainty and lack of direction regarding his future career. Through the TtW program, he received comprehensive support, including driving lessons, training opportunities in aged care, resume writing assistance, and mentoring. His passion for connecting with mature-aged individuals led him to pursue a career in aged care. The program enabled him to complete Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged) and secure employment at an aged care facility. Lachlan's experience highlights the significant impact of the TtW program in empowering young adults to discover their career interests, gain skills, and pursue meaningful pathways for a brighter future.

Introduction:
The transition from high school to a career can be a daunting and overwhelming experience for many young adults. Lachlan's story exemplifies the challenges he faced when moving to Australia and not knowing where to begin in shaping his future career. The case study sheds light on how the Transition to Work program played a pivotal role in guiding Lachlan towards a fulfilling career in aged care.

Background:
After graduating from high school and moving to Australia from New Zealand, Lachlan felt uncertain about his career path. He engaged in casual roles with limited prospects, leaving him feeling lost and uninspired. Despite having family members in the aged care industry, Lachlan lacked clarity on how to enter the field and receive the necessary training.

Methods:
This case study gathers information about Lachlan's journey through the Transition to Work program. Interviews with Lachlan, program staff, and documentation of the support provided are analysed to present a comprehensive account of Lachlan's experience.

Results:
Joining the Transition to Work program proved to be a turning point for Lachlan. The program provided him with a range of assistance, including driving lessons to obtain his licence and the opportunity to complete Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged). Lachlan received clothing for his training, resume writing assistance, and ongoing support and mentoring throughout the process.

Lachlan's choice to pursue a career in aged care was deeply rooted in his passion for connecting with mature-aged individuals and learning from their knowledge and stories. The experience of working alongside his grandfather at the RSL in Surfers Paradise ignited this interest in aged care.

Through the TtW program, Lachlan successfully completed his training and secured employment at an aged care facility. Looking ahead, he aspires to undertake Certificate III in Allied Health, fostering his goal of living independently and eventually going on a well-deserved holiday to Hawaii.
