Imagine waking up and spending 23 hours of your day in complete darkness, stepping outside into winds that slice through layers of clothing.

That was my reality during two weeks in the Arctic - a place of stark beauty, but also of extremes.

The polar night meant daylight was scarce, temperatures plunged below zero, and chilling winds cut to the core. I expected adventure, but I didn’t anticipate the toll it would take on my health.

My recovery metrics stayed stubbornly in the red throughout my holiday. Poor hydration, limited movement, and a lack of vitamin D all played their part. Even simple routines felt harder to maintain, and my body reminded me daily of the cost.

This once in a lifetime experience taught me something important: when we neglect the basics - hydration, movement, sunlight - our resilience suffers.

And yet, many of us do something similar throughout the year. We push through deadlines, juggle responsibilities, and rarely pause long enough to truly recover.

Christmas offers a rare opportunity to change that.

It’s one of the few times when the world slows down. Emails stop. Meetings disappear. People take time off.

This isn’t just a holiday - it’s a window for genuine rest and recovery.

So, as the festive season approaches, I encourage you to make the most of it.

Step away from the constant noise. Hydrate. Move gently. Soak up the sunshine if you can. Sleep without an alarm. Spend time with those who matter most.

These small acts aren’t indulgent - they’re essential.

Rest isn’t passive; it’s preparation. When we allow ourselves to recover mentally and physically, we start the new year stronger, clearer, and ready for what lies ahead.

This Christmas, give yourself the gift of rest. Your future self will thank you.
