Many parents have questions or concerns about their children’s development but don’t know where to turn. That’s why paediatric occupational therapist Allison Foster is inviting parents to her free, informal drop-in session at IMPACT Community Services on Wednesday 20 May from 12:30 to 1:30 pm.
Allison will be available to provide guidance on everything from toileting and fine motor skills to emotional regulation and service options.
She said the goal is to make support accessible to those who need it most.
“There are some parents who are on BUSHKids’ waitlist, but they don't have any allied health services,” Allison said.
“They’re really the ones that I am targeting: the ones that feel lost and lonely or are curious about their child's development.
“It's good to let them know that they are on the right path.”
Tomorrow’s drop-in session is the third Allison has offered, with the most recent session drawing a crowd of around 10 parents.
Allison is eager to continue building momentum, eventually transforming these informal sessions into a monthly structured parent group.
“I'm hoping for repeat people, because I'm hoping that some parents can join forces and then be able to support each other,” Allison said.
Families walk away from Allison’s sessions with greater confidence and strategies under their belt to help their children thrive.
She also connects parents with services that suit their child’s needs, whether it’s a GP or a community services organisation like IMPACT.
Allison said that this small investment of her time can make a big difference, and her personal motherhood experience drives her to do her part to support parents.
“I've always volunteered. It's an hour once a month. It’s not a big deal,” Allison said.
“I felt very isolated when my children were young, so I just want to be able to help other families.”
Allison will hold her occupational therapy session on Wednesday 20 May at 108 Bargara Road, Bundaberg. No referral is needed, and all families are welcome.
