"STRONGER TOGETHER" is a weekly column where Tanya explores key issues. This week Tanya focuses goal setting ahead of 2022.

The tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions can be traced back thousands of years.

While some aspects of the resolution tradition have changed, along with the actual calendar, the prospects of growth (whether it be for a fruitful crop or personal development) remains the same.

The sentiment of a new year and thus a resolution carries with it an element of reflection, renewal and promise.

In today’s climate a little bit of hope and aspiration really can go a long way, even if it seems trivial.

Resolutions for the most part are essentially goals and setting goals that you are passionate about at the start of a new year can be a great guiding post for your 2022.

Goals can increase focus, aid decision making and increase a sense of control and self.

But, despite how well intentioned you are, how do you stick to it?

Relativity and tailoring are key.

At IMPACT Community Services we’re dedicated to improving lives and we understand the importance of specialised and specific support to help someone achieve their goals.

Whether it be our clients, participants, volunteers or staff, we want everyone to achieve their goals and better their lives in whatever way that looks like for them.

Some common resolutions are to improve your health, save money, quit a bad habit or read more.

While they are great goals, they are broad and if they aren’t tailored to your life and needs, you simply won’t do them, you need to implement a practical plan to accompany your resolution.

Your resolutions should align with your passions, values, needs or wants.

It’s not going to happen overnight, and you need to want to do it for yourself, but know you’re not alone and there’s support available.

If you want to improve your health, what type of exercise do you enjoy, how much sleep do you get, are you drinking enough water, how do you relax?

If you want to save money, how much money do you want to save? What’s your budget, how can you reduce your expenditure and/or increase your income, do you need a new job or a raise?

With your resolution set and your plan in play, it’s also important not to be overly critical - you are human, and you still need to enjoy your life.

IMPACT Community Services wishes you a safe and happy New Year and we look forward to helping the community make their resolutions a reality in 2022.

IMPACT’s office at 108 Bargara Rd will open on January 4.
